On the Earth's surface, Longitude has a range of 360 degrees. It can go from 0 to 360 degrees or from -180 to + 180 degrees.

Latitude goes from -90 degrees to +90 degrees.

In space, the Earth's longitude measures its annual progress round the Sun. The Sun appears to follow a path called the ecliptic, as a result of the Earth's orbit. In fact the ecliptic defines the plane of the Earth's orbit.

When the Earth's longitude on the ecliptic is 100 degrees, it defines the true moment of the start of the New Year, usually on Jan 1.
