Isaac Slade wrote How to Save a Life whilst he was dealing with a drug addicted teenager who was contemplating suicide, and who in the end did take his own life. The song is dedicated to that teenager and tells the story of Slade's relationship with the boy during this difficult period of his life -yeah its about when the leader slade went to a kids and teens suicide camp that his friend ran. Slade was in charge, or like the counsler of this one teenage boy who was suicidal. Slade tried to talk to him and told him not to kill himself. But then the boy killed himself that night. So slade feels guilty because he was in charge of the boy. Like in the song "and i would have stayed up with you all night had i known how to save a life". So slade think if he had spent more time with the boy he wouldnt have killed himself.
