In the middle ages, combatants usually had a misercordia, or mercy dagger, to kill wounded combatants with a piercing stab to the heart. A misercordia was a long thin dagger to more easily pierce armor and avoid ribs to pierce the heart and kill combatant quickly, as opposed to letting them lay on the battlefield and suffer a long, agonizing death.
