However an infectious disease is when the disease can be transmitted from person to person by air, water, food and touch and is usually caused by a virus, bacteria or fungus. So for example malaria, is contagious because it is either caused by a bacteria or virus, therefore an infectious disease.
In the other hand diabetes isn't contagious because it cannot be spread by person to person unless it is a genetic disorder.
