Sickle cell disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, meaning a child must receive a copy of the sickle cell gene from both parents to have the disease. If both parents carry the sickle cell trait (one normal and one sickle cell gene), there is a 25% chance with each pregnancy that their child will inherit the disease. Therefore, sickle cell can be passed on from either the mother or the father, or both.

Sickle-cell anemia is characterised by abnormal haemoglobin which are not the correct shape and cannot carry oxygen. It is a genetic disease - and a person must have two copies of the gene to have sickle-cell anemia. (Heterozygous individuals, with one copy, are known as having sickle-cell trait - and some of their haemoglobin may be misshapen).
Sickle cell disease is an autosomal recessive disorder, meaning that it is caused by a mutation in one of the autosomal chromosomes (chromosomes that are not sex chromosomes). In the case of sickle cell disease, the mutation occurs in the gene encoding the beta-globin subunit of hemoglobin on chromosome 11.
