In the old days before this digital age, information was stored on paper. Vast repositories called libraries stored information, on every topic and for every purpose, in the form of books. The books were kept on shelves in the "stacks," and the key to knowing where in the stacks to look for a particular book was called the Card Catalogue, actually two card catalogues: one for authors and one for subjects. In the subject card catalogue, library books are listed according to their subject.
