Sanam is urdu word derived from an Arabic word isnaam

isnaam is said to something which people take to worship (idols or any other objects which has well defined face means like animals , human beings birds etc)

It is commonly a misconception among people that sanam is a word used to describe someone's lover , No but it is someone whom u worship beside God .

that is why they say in one of a old Urdu proverb "na khuda mila na visaal e sanam na idhar ke rahe na udhar ke " in English "Nor did i get God neither did i get my sanam(idol/diety ) I was left neither here not there"
