I think that it means is that when you really want to do something, and you get a chance to do it, but you don't think it is quite good enough yet and you don't go for it, that is like the water. But once that chance slips away, it isn't coming back. So the water is there, but you have to get it, no matter how much is left, because it will only turn dry if you wait, and then it will be gone. T

This proverb is like saying that "The water is still there until it dries up," if that makes a little more sense. You can't just let the water get drier and drier until it is gone, you have to get it because it isn't going to fill higher.

salamz ! Well , According to me the meaning of this pharse is something aren't appericiated until they are gone . in other words we can say that .... when we had some think we do not take care of it and it had gone far away from us then we come to know the importance of it . thx

That is spot on above: We tend to appreciate something more once it is gone. Lets not then take it for granted whilst we have it. Like relationship, till that person is gone, you don't see exactly what that person really meant to you....well for some that is.

It's like the lyric from the '60's song " You don't know what you got til it's gone" from "They Paved Paradise, and put up a Parking Lot".

THE GUY ABOVE ME IS AN IDIOT. THE SONG IS BIG YELLOW TAXI BY THE COUNTING CROWS. A BAND FORMED IN THE 90'S.
It means you never miss something until it is gone, that you take things for granted
It means that until we run out of water, we will not think of water as an essential.
It mean that you don't know how much something really means to you, until you

know longer have it.
