As in blotted out the sun?

to block, cover, eclipse, engulf. The term dates from quill pens. Blotting out means covering ( a text) with a drop of ink, and then applying a bit of blotting paper to soak up the excess. The result is an ink blot that effectively obscures the text underneath.
