Labyrinthite is the French word for "labyrinthitis" which is the inflammation of the inner ear. It is usually caused by a virus, but can also occur due to bacterial invasion, head injury, extreme stress, an allergy or reaction to a medication. Many times it follows an upper respiratory infection. Bacterial and Viral invasion can cause permanent hearing loss.
