Brief answer: It's about Suzumiya Haruhi, a girl obsessed with the supernatural (the three major things she usually shows interest in are aliens, time travelers and espers). She is also God. (But she doesn't know it) She forms a club dedicated to the discovery of aliens, time travelers, and espers. The people who join are Nagato Yuki (an alien), Asahina Mikuru (a time traveler) and Koizumi Itsuki (guess), along with the narrator, Kyon (a normal human). Of course, Haruhi doesn't realise that any of the members are anything but normal. Once all the characters are established, the rest of the first season is basically Kyon, Itsuki, Yuki, and to a lesser extent Mikuru trying to keep Haruhi from getting bored and inadvertently destroying the universe.
