As of today $14.00 is current MV for US silver dollars
on the collecting side aroud $3 depending on condition.....the siver value is worth a little more than that on the melt value side.
It is worth whatever melt is. The silver dollar is damaged and they never use rare dates (the 1928 peace dollar is rare, it is likely a 1928-S coin which is quite common) and so it would be worth about $20 for the coin. However, there is the question on whether the money clip itself is silver, usually the clip would be marked "STERLING" or 925 if it is silver. If the clip is silver, you have added value with whatever the weight of the silver clip is.
Assuming the coin is circulated, still in collectible condition and has no mintmark, the 1922 Peace dollar is the highest mintage, most common date coin of the series, average retail values, as of 5-29-11, are $36.00-$40.00. With silver at $37.96 per ounce the Melt Value of the coin is $29.86.
None of the Eisenhower dollar coins (1971-1978) made for general circulation have any silver and are worth more than face value. For 1972 only Proof and collectors coins with "S mintmarks sold from the US Mint contain any silver, and that's just 40%.
Selling silver coins by the pound will net you little more than melt value, or the raw value of the silver. Legal tender silver coins minted before 1964 are roughly 90% silver. See the Related Link "Current precious metal values" for the current spot price of silver. Multiply that by 316.8 (the total number of ounces of silver you have, assuming they're all 90% silver coins) to get the melt value. You might want to make sure, though, that there aren't any rarities in there, or that they're not just coloredsilver. The dates are also important; a "silver dollar" minted after 1964 is, at best, 40% silver (unless it's an American Silver Eagle), and could be cupro-nickel clad.
As of June 4 2011 the melt value of a 90% silver half dollar is $13.13. See the related link below for a updated price. After clicking the link click on silver melt values at the top right of the page. Then scroll down to the link that says 1964 Kennedy half dollar.
