Best Answer

The Cell membrane encompasses All Cells. It protects the Cell and controls what substances go in and out of It. So basically, It keeps all of the harmful products out of the Cell, and It lets good products come into the Cell.

Some Cells, such as plant Cells or fungi, have a Cell wall, which is different from a Cell membrane. Cell walls are on the outside of some Cells. They are a thick layer of nonliving material made of cellulose. They protect and support the Cell, and give Cells a rigid, box-like shape.

For animal Cells, since they don't have a Cell wall, the Cell membrane is the outer boundary that seperates the inside of the Cell from the environment around them. But for plant Cells, fungi, bacteria Cells, and other Cells with a Cell wall, the Cell membrane surrounds the Cell, but the Cell wall surrounds the Cell with the Cell membrane around it.
