There are several "metric systems"; the one officially used in science nowadays is called "SI".

In the SI unit, meter is used for length; kilogram for mass; and volume of course is a derived unit, measured in cubic meters.

The SI (Systeme International) units for mass is the kilogram. For length, it is the Metre, and for volume, the Litre.

Note the system is known as the International System, (SI).

The International Bureau for Weights and Measures is located near Paris France, the on their web site they have lots of useful information, including for example, the prefixes for the multiples and sub-multiples. Such as Mega, and micro.
