Some of WikiAnswers' most active and trusted contributors become Supervisors. These individuals are given additional Super Powers to perform an array of higher-level edits. Supervisors are able to merge questions together, block vandals, and spin off discussion posts into questions, and are equipped with a variety of other special abilities and functions to use at their discretion. Becoming a Supervisor does not require a minimum amount of work, but does require that the tools be used responsibly. We currently have two types of Supervisors: Category Supervisors and Floating Supervisors. Category Supervisors oversee one or more categories of interest. Often, those employed (or hobbyists) in a certain field will choose to become a Category-specific Supervisor. This gives them the advantage of really recognizing answers that need work, as they are familiar with the lingo and concepts . A Floating Supervisor, on the other hand, has all of the same tools as a Category Supervisor, without the responsibilities of overseeing a certain area of the site. This is a more open-ended way to get started. It's ideal for those without a lot of time, but who still want to contribute with more high-powered tools when they visit the site.
There is no minimum age for a registered user. The only time age limits apply - is if (for example) a user wants to advance to supervisor level - where the minimum age is 15.

The time is takes for a Special Project Assistant (SPA) to be promoted to any kind of Supervisor is entirely dependent on the individual. Those that complete tasks quickly and show a great aptitude and knowledge of the site, progress quicker than others. Each SPA is assessed on their own merits and achievements, and there is no set time frame placed on the period they will remain an SPA. How long before they become a Supervisor is based solely on how well they complete the tasks set and their conduct on the site. Note that there is also a minimum age to be a supervisor.
To have a category, there must be a certain number of questions belonging to that category, usually a minimum of 100. However, many categories are not 'stand alone' subjects and could be properly addressed in another category. As new subjects emerge Answers.com reviews the categories and adds to them.

When you send a request to become a Supervisor (and you are 15 and have asked at least 3 questions, and made 15 edits and answers to questions), it may take about a week for a response to come to you. You may be asked to first join the SPA program, which is a program that is basically a training program to see if you have the determination or WikiAnswers skills to become a Supervisor. Your SPA program will take 1 month at minimum to complete, if you complete each task very promptly, so don't expect to become a Supervisor right away just because you filled out the application.
