Waning
Getting smaller is waning. Getting larger is waxing.
That is called waning, the opposite of waxing.

The moon is said to be waning, when the lighted part gets smaller. When it gets larger, the moon is waxing.
The moon is called a waning moon when it is growing smaller in size. This occurs right after a full moon, as the moon transitions from being fully illuminated to gradually becoming less visible.
It is the waning phase.
'Waning' means getting smaller. But the moon is not getting smaller during that half of its cycle. What's waning is the amount of the moon's illuminated half that we're able to see.
The moon phase that appears to be getting smaller is called weaning. A teacher once said that you could remember weaning because it sounds like whining. Sometimes, a child whines when they don't get all of what they want. Also, waxing is when the moon gets larger
When the moon appears to be getting smaller, (approaching nothing - no moon, or "new moon") we say that the moon is "Waning".When the moon appears to be getting larger (approaching the "Full Moon"), we say that the moon is "Waxing".
