The most economical transportation in Spain is the bus system. Trains are also inexpensive.
That pretty much depends on where you live. In metropolitan areas the most common is public transportation, no upkeep, no insurance, not having to look/pay for parking. In rural areas it is the automobile, especially where there is no public transportation.
Walking as most people could not afford a horse. There was not that much else invented yet

You would take a ferry to Alcatraz Island, while there the only transportation would be walking.
If you own a car and you don't live relatively near any public transportation, then travel by car is most used. If you live in a city, then subway or bus is most common. There ae also lots of taxis near large cities and airports.
