I was once taught Sedimentary rock is the most common rock found ON the Earth's surface.

This is due to the constant work of erosion wearing down igneous rock and uplifted metamorphic rock and reforming the sediments as sedimentary rock.

Sedimentary rock is of two types: 1) formed form detritus and 2) formed from organic materials.

Erosion explains the prevalence of the first type, while the death deposition and decay of ancient living things explains the second( lignite, coal, etc. ).

The crust is composed of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock types. The vast majority of crustal rock is igneous in origin.
