The most important energy carrier in the cell is ADP or adenosine diphosphate. Cells store energy in the form of ATP or adenosine triphosphate which is the same as ADP accept with the addition of an extra phosphate group, it is this extra phosphate group that enzymes in the cell are able to use for energy. They do this by storing energy in high energy covalent bonds that is formed between the phosphate and oxygen atoms in ATP, many enzymes that operate in cells known as ATPases have the ability to break this bond and transfer the energy released into the desired system.

First 6 carbon sugar is broken down into two 3 carbon sugar, some ATP is produced during this cycle but very little, This set of reactions are known as the kreb cycle or citric acid cycle. After the sugar has broken down, in cellular life such as us humans the next step goes to the organelle the mitochondrial. The mitochondrial is a two membrane system and in the inner membrane there is a very important enzyme known as ATP synthase. This enzyme is a proton transport protein. What this means is that is transports hydrogen ions from one side of the inner membrane to the other, this create and electrical gradient, if you are to pass a ADP molecule along that gradient it is able to idealize bonding condition thus reducing the time and energy taken to form covelant bonds, by reducing both time and energy taken the cell can produce energy that is favorable for its survival or in other words has a negative delta g value.
