I think one of the most important was pasteurization. French chemist, Louis Pasteur invented the "pasteurizing" method to kill germs in wine, beer and milk. Equally important was the fact that Pasteur was among the first people to believe germs caused illness. This was at a time when most doctors didn't believe germs could make you sick and wouldn't sanitize their hands or instruments.
