Windows XP is still by far the most used version of Windows.
It depends on what kind of version you have but most of them work perfectly

Vista Home and Business, but you can optimize Ultimate too, for instance, by turning Aero glass off.
There are several downloads for Vista themes for making Windows XP look like Vista. Some are Vista Skin Pack 5.0, Vista Live Pack, Razor Vista and Vista Inspirat 2. Others are VistaVG Blue Refresh, Royale Vista Hybrid, and DZVista.

Different version of Windows use a different activation key. When you did the right thing by yourself in upgrading to Windows 7 that disabled you vista key. Even Microsoft has described Windows 7 as Vista with the bugs squashed. Most people who can have dumped Vista and enjoyed the change up to Windows 7. Drivers written for Windows Vista are not backwards-compatible with Windows XP. Most hardware that has a driver for Vista should also have a driver for Windows XP.
