It was most likely the Gigantopithecus ("giant ape"), an ancient cousin of the modern day orangutan. It is estimated to have stood 10 feet tall and weighed 1200 lbs. This size, however, is only an estimation based on tooth and partial jaw bone fossil evidence. Not even a partial skeleton has been found. This is needed to verify whether the ape was indeed this size. Gigantopithecus was no doubt larger than a gorilla, though. The largest teeth found are over an inch wide. This points to a creature of substantial size and strength.
An extinct species of humans, called Homo habilis.

A Neanderthal is a hominid, belonging to the same family (Hominidae) as modern humans. They were neither primitive nor advanced in comparison to modern humans; they had their own unique adaptations and characteristics that helped them survive in their environment.
The most advanced hominid in terms of tool-making abilities and spoken language was Homo sapiens. Our species developed sophisticated tool-making techniques and complex language abilities that set us apart from other hominids. This allowed us to communicate effectively, plan and organize activities, and develop more advanced technologies.
I do not believe there is an antonym for hominid.
