I would say heat detection. Pit Vipers especially, have heat sensitive 'pits' located on their heads - which enable them to hunt prey in total darkness. Like most snakes - they feed on warm-blooded rodents such as rats and mice - these rodents hive off heat as they move - which the snake senses.
