Before BC ferries, a privately owned ferry company called Black Ball ferries operated in and out of Horseshoe Bay. They had control of the routes to Gibsons and Nanaimo, starting from 1951. In fact, they built the first terminal at Horseshoe Bay. Before this, there really wasn't a lot of travel between the mainland and vancouver island, it was mainly just for industrial purposes.
I'm not sure what the maximum sped of a ferry is, but our BC ferries usually travel between 35km - 40km.
The BC Ferry is an excellent way to travel. The ferry has received very high reviews, with fun areas for children, a knowledgeable captain, and good food in the restaurant.
There are ferry terminals to the North and South of Vancouver. The southern terminal is in Tsawwassen and goes to Schwartz Bay (just north of Victoria, BC). The northern terminal is in Horseshoe Bay and goes to Nanaimo. Both terminals have ferries to the Gulf islands as well. Information can be found on the BC Ferries website provided in the 'related links'.
