The original british Special Air Service (SAS) created the motto from a longer more descriptive phrase. Unfortunately I've forgotten what it was, but it was David Sterling who miniaturised it into "Who Dares Wins".

The first recipient of the G.C.V was Acting Captain Chris Schulenberg, S.C.R. of the Selous Scouts. At the end of the conflict and following majority rule in 1980, the Grand Cross of Valour was also awarded to Major Grahame Wilson, S.C.R., B.C.R. who was the Commanding Officer of 1 (Rhodesian) Special Air Service Regiment which subsequently disbanded at the end of December 1980. Major Wilson thus became Rhodesia's most highly-decorated soldier having the G.C.V, S.C.R and the B.C.R..
