New Mexico's state motto is "Crescit eundo". This is Latin for "it grows as it goes" and came from an epic poem called On the Nature of Things by the Latin poet Lucretius. The Territorial Secretary William G. Ritch included the motto to an early version of the territory's seal and it was adopted as part of the state seal when it ceased to be a territory.
