Hamlet doesn't actually stage a play called The Mousetrap. He asks the travelling players (The Tragedians of the City) to put on The Murder of Gonzago, which is the real name of the play. Hamlet calls it the Mousetrap because his purpose in asking them to play it is to trap Claudius into a confession of guilt.

Claudius. He calls the play "The Mousetrap" because he sees it as a way to manipulate Claudius into showing guilt for his murder. We might be more specific and say it's Claudius's conscience he wants to catch.

Hamlet wanted proof that Claudius was guilty of his crimes.

"...the devil hath power / T'assume a pleasing shape..." so there was a chance that the devil was trying to tempt Hamlet into committing a sin.

During the play which re-enacts King Hamlet's murder, Hamlet watched his uncle to see how he reacts. Claudius's reaction is positive and Hamlet is now almost certain that it was indeed murder.

How many months did Hamlet live after his fathers death?

At the play The Mousetrap Ophelia says it is "twice two months" since the senior Hamlet died. After that there is time for Hamlet to leave, for Laertes to hear in France that his father has died, and to return to Denmark, reconcile with Claudius, hear that Hamlet is returned, plan a fencing match and put it into motion: at least a couple of weeks more. It is about four-and-a-half months later.

What previous work influenced Shakespeare's Hamlet?

The Hamlet story got into popular culture by means of Belleforest's telling of the tale. However, many scholars believe that there may have been an earlier Hamlet play (which they call the Ur-Hamlet) which was the direct source for Shakespeare's work. There is an intriguing German play on the Hamlet story called Der Brudermord (The Brother-killer) which appears to have been translated from an Elizabethan revenge play very much in the style of Kyd's Spanish Tragedy. Was this the Ur-Hamlet? Could be.
