The primordial deity Proteus had the power of prophecy, but was reluctant to use it, so he would change shape whenever approached. It was said that he would only give a reading to someone who could capture him, but his ever changing shape made that exceedingly difficult.

From his ever-changing shape, we get the word "protean" which means versatile, malleable or adaptable.
