Classic Servers: Classic servers are free for all to play. Creative/Survival/Hardcore: Many of these servers require you to fill in an application in the servers "official" thread on the Minecraft forum. Most of the time, servers are "whitelisted". Which means you cannot access the server unless your application has been approved. You will be automatically kicked by the server if it does not recognise your name. Some servers are not whitelisted and are free for anybody to join on condition that you follow the server rules. Take a look at the Minecraft forums to see which servers require you to apply or which are free for anybody to join.
You can search for Minecraft servers on websites such as Minecraft Server List and Planet Minecraft. Some popular servers include us/eu.mineplex.com, play.cubecraftgames.net and play.hivemc.com where there are a bunch of plugins, custom gamemodes and minigames for you to check out.
There are many servers available online and sometimes are full and even offline. You have to find right one for you. Go ahead and Google for Minecraft Servers and you get list of bunch of them. If you have the original version of minecraft.

Some servers have a "whitelist" that you need to be on to get into the server. These are also called private servers. To get onto a whitelist, you need to contact the people in charge of the server and ask them to add your minecraft name to the whitelist. If they do, you can now connect to the server by using the IP.
Of course! When creating a world, click on the Gamemode button underneath the world name and seed until you see Creative.
Start a new world then go to the button directly under where you name the worl and click on it until it says creative.
