The third largest island of New Zealand is Stewart Island also known by itsnative name of Rakiura. Stewart Island is located 30km south of the South Island. Its main settlement is Oban, where most of the island's population of about 380 people live.
The Maori name for Stewart Island is Rakiura, which means "glowing skies" in reference to the Aurora Australis that's often seen in the region. It is New Zealand's third-largest island.
