Beethoven had a grandfather, also named Ludwig who died when he was very young. He had a grandmother named Josepha who passed on her Alcoholism to her son, Beethoven's father, Johann. Johann was a highly irresponsible father who had to be looked after by his children more than he looked after them. Beethoven's mother, Maria Magdelena died when Beethoven was 17 but was a wonderfully kind woman who Beethoven loved very much. Beethoven older brother, Ludwig Maria died before Beethoven was born. Beethoven had two younger brothers named Caspar Anton Carl and Nikolas Johann. He had more younger siblings but none of them lived to adulthood. Their names were Franz Georg, Anna Franziska and Maria Magaretha. When he was older Beethoven had a nephew (son of Caspar Carl) named Karl who he looked after once Caspar Carl had died. It was over this boy that Beethoven had a bitter custody battle with Johanna van Beethoven (Caspar Carl's widow). Beethoven never married but he had some illegitamate children named Minoa (with Josephine von Brunswick and Karl with Antoine Brentano and possible others as well.

Johann later married Maria Magdalena Kewerich (beethoven's mother). They gave birth to their first child who died 6 days later. Beethoven was their 2nd child
