Sarcophagus, or sarcophagi in the plural, is the term generally used to describe the final resting place of ancient Egyptian burial ceremonies. They were designed to remain above ground, thus their extremely decorative carvings.

At times, some sarcophagi may actually contain several layers of coffins between the outer shell of the sarcophagus and the corpse of the person buried therein.

The ancient Egyptian words for a coffin are written qrswor swHt in hieroglyphs - the vowels were not written.

Greek visitors to Egypt used the word sarcophagus, which is today used in English for ancient coffins of all types.
