The vast majority of knitting patterns include both knits and purls. The only exceptions that come to mind would be garter stitch in the flat and stockinette (or reverse stockinette) in the round.

Perhaps you are thinking of ribbing, where knits and purls are alternated in a row that is repeated over and over again. The most common rib pattern is:

Cast on an even number of stitches

Row 1: K1, P1, repeat to end of row

Repeat Row 1 to desired length of ribbing

It means one of two things, depending on how the pattern is written. 1. Perform knit stitches to the end of the row. or 2. Continue in pattern to the end of the row. If the pattern instructions include parenthesis or asterisks just prior to the instruction to knit across, then option 2 is intended. Otherwise it is option 1.

When knitting after you have cast on when it comes time to knit the slip knot do you knit it or does it stay on your left needle Or do you knit it over to the right needle?

When you reach the slip knot, knit it just like all of the other stitches, throwing it off at the end just like the other stitches. When you have knit the slip knot, all of the stitches should be on the right needle, and the left needle should be completely free*.*There may be some exceptions to this rule, as in circular knitting, but this will not be addressed until you are an advanced knitter, and you don't have to worry about that right now.
