6 letter word of a rock that is formed when magma cools at the Earth's surface?

quartz ---------------------------------- Your question is ambiguous, is it the name of a mineral you want, or the name of a magma that is cooled below the earths surface?Quartz is OK for a mineral but if you want the 6 letter name for the rock then:- A pluton in geology is an intrusive igneous rock body that crystallized from magma slowly cooling below the surface of the Earth.

Magma is molten material that when cooled forms a solid called igneous rock

What is the magma that reaches the earth's surface?

Magma that reaches the surface is referred to as lava.magma that has reached the earth's surface tends to cool faster, that is why the rock will have more holes in it than a rock that has not reached the earth's surface. magma that has cooled enough to become a rock is known as a igneous rock. but there are two types of igneous rock. ther is intrusive igneous and extrusive igneous. intrusive is when the magma has cooled on the inside. this rock will have large crystals because it has cooled slower and most likely it will have a fine grained texture. extrusive igneous is when magma has reached earths surface (thats when it becomes lava) and has cooled. these rock with either have very small microscopic crystals or no crystals at all because the lava cools so quickly that they do not have enough time to really form.

Is all igneous rock formed from lava that cooled on Earths surface?

No the rock may have cooled underground but yes all igneous rock was once magma.

Why would granite have larger crystals than rocks formed from lava cooled above earth surface?

Because crystals in granite had more time to form as the magma cooled slowly. Crystals that form on the surface are smaller because they cooled really quickly.
