I think you may be referring to the Lernaean Hydra, which by varying accounts has as few as 5 and as many as 100 heads. 9, however, is the accepted standard.

Not a serpent, it's a Hydra. Legend has it that if you cut of one of it's heads, it grows back two more terrifying, isn't it? You can only kill a Hydra by slicing of its' head then burning it.

From the information contained in those scriptures, Krishna was a little boy when he danced upon the (5) heads of a hooded serpent.
