Probably the closest equivalent is Funnel Cake. They're probably not the same, and there probably isn't an English word for jelabi or, as Wikipedia spells it, jalebi.
There is no history behind Fafda & Jalebi to be consumed on this day. I am sure, there was a great businessman once upon a time who somehow managed to get this association (in name of God) and its been followed blindly. Kudos to him/her.
