In the development of the cinema, he is often credited alongside Thomas Edison, the Lumiere brothers, Leon Bouly, and George Melies. He invented "roll film" paving the way for others to invent motion pictures.

George Eastman marketed the first roll of flexible photographic film, Eastman Negative Paper, in 1884 which was a coating on a paper base. It was called "stripping film" because the paper backing had to be stripped off during processing. Eastman American Film was introduced in 1885, the first transparent photographic film, "celluloid film" or "nitrate film". Reverend Hannibal Goodwin invented a roll film with a transparent backing that was more flexible and the Eastman company acquired this film in 1889.

They also made a form of magazine sheet-film holder that bore a strange resemblance to a modern Xerox machine. had this device been pushed ahead in R&D, Xerox-Like office copiers could have made the scedne as early as l900! Eastman concentrated on film for cameras and film cameras, and the magazine-sheet film gadget was evidentally dropped from the commercial line. It was a forerunner of the modern Xerox.
