That was the Rosetta Stone, so named for the area it was found in. It had chiseled on it a decree from Pharoah Ptolemy in 3 languages. A couple of thousand years after the Rosetta Stone was first made, scientists could use their excellent knowledge of Greek to figure out the Egyptian glyphs. It took quite a while for them to "get it".
Francois Champollion decoded the Rosetta Stone in 1822, 23 years after its discovery by French soldiers. Champollion could read both Greek and Coptic, and was able to use that knowledge to trace the meanings of symbols back to the hieroglyphs on the stone.
