World War 2 started in September 1939. Therefore the first Ship lost by the US Navy was DD-245 USS Reuben James sunk on 31/10/1941 by U562 300 miles south of Iceland escorting convoy HX156 to Britain. 115 US sailors were killed.

Revenge was obtained on 19/02/1943 when the U562 was itself sunk with all hands by the Royal Navy destroyers HMS Isis and HMS Hursley.
