The Northern States ;)
The northern states, or the union, won the civil war because the southern states, or confederate, surrendered after a great number of soldiers were lost.
The American Civil War is sometimes called the War Between the States, the War of Rebellion, or the War for Southern Independence. People in the Northern States tended to call it the Civil War, even though it was, obviously, not very civil. People in the Southern States tended to call it "The War Between the States", which it was. So they were probably right. But the South lost. So the North got to pick the name.
