A loyalist was a person who was loyal to the king, but there was no particular profession or job that was held by a loyalist. As with any political philosophy it is not determined by work the person does.

The two terms refer to very different concepts. A colonist is a person who is a citizen of a state located far away, but settles in the name of that state as opposed to incorporating into a more local state. A loyalist is a person who is patriotic to the current government of his/her state of citizenship. You can have loyalist colonists, revolutionary colonists, loyalist statesmen, and revolutionary statesmen.
One reason John Baker remained a loyalist was so that he could sell his product at the market. A loyalist was a person that remained loyal to the King.
