There are 9 working power stations on the Waikato River between Lake Taupo and the river's mouth at Port Waikato. There are also two decommissioned power stations on the river.

From Lake Taupo, they are:

  • Wairakei (176MW geothermal)
  • Aratiatia (84MW hydro)
  • Ohaaki (50MW geothermal)
  • Ohakuri (112MW hydro)
  • Atiamuri (84MW hydro)
  • Whakamaru (100MW hydro)
  • Maraetai (360MW hydro)
  • Waipapa (51MW hydro)
  • Arapuni (197MW hydro)
  • Karapiro (96MW hydro)
  • Huntly (1435MW coal/gas)

The two decommissioned stations are:

  • Horahora (hydro): between Arapuni and Karapiro. Was submerged in 1947 when Lake Karapiro was filled
  • Meremere (coal): between Huntly and Port Waikato. Was decommisioned in 1991 after 33 years in service.

The one you are most likely to be talking about is Huntly - it's on the Waikato River between Auckland and Hamilton, easily seen from State Highway 1.
