Barney Barnato arrived in Cape Town on the ship named the "Dunedin." His arrival in 1873 marked the beginning of his journey in the diamond mining industry, which ultimately led to significant wealth and influence in South Africa.
He actually spelled his surname Barnato (although his real surname was Isaacs). He was of Jewish descent and from London, and he followed his brother to South Africa to seek his fortune at the newly discovered diamond fields. He did indeed become an extremely rich man who eventually collaborated with Cecil John Rhodes in the formation of the mighty De Beers Consolidated Mines. Barnato, however, jumped of the ship and drowned when he returned to England just before the turn of the century in 1979.
