Merchant ships and escorts formed a convoy to improve security on the high seas.
A system in which heavy guard of destroyers escorted the merchant ships back and forth across the Atlantic in groups
Early in the war, merchant ships carrying supplies to both Russia and Britain were targeted heavily by German U-Boats(submarines). Since there were not enough destroyers and destroyer escorts to protect each individual ship, convoys were formed. In these convoys, merchant ships were grouped together and protected by a small number of escort vessels

It was necessary because then every convoy could be escorted by destroyers to protect them from German U-boats. The destroyers were armed with sonar and depth charges to find and destroy German Subs.
Indian navy is an armed force consisting of a variety if war ships such as, aircraft carriers, battle ships, destroyers, frigates, submarines,et. whereas the merchant navy is commercial organization consisting of tankers, cargo ships etc.
The system you are referring to is the Convoy System. In this system, cargo ships traveled together in groups, typically escorted by navy warships for protection against enemy attacks during times of war. This system was commonly used during World War I and World War II to safeguard merchant ships from submarines and other threats.
American submarines sank Japanese merchant ships.
"Guerre de Course", Merchant Ship sinking.
Early in the war, the unrestricted use of submarine warfare against British Merchant shipping nearly doomed the nation. After supply ships began crossing from the United States, they became easy prey for the veteran U-Boat commanders. The primary use of a submarine, even today, is to ensure that you control the sea access lanes to your enemy, by attacking ships or submarines. Eventually, the Allies countered the threat and ultimately doomed the U-Boats. Organized, Escorted Supply Convoys, escorted by Navy Destroyers and Frigates that could make the Transatlantic crossing to England, proved a real problem for the U-Boats. The use of Merchant Carriers, Merchant Ships that could carry & launch 4 Recon aircraft, also helped to nullify the advantage. The addition of RADAR on Navy ships meant a U-Boat at Periscope Depth or surfaced could be detected, even at night; and the ultimate employment of long-range bombers sealed the U-Boats fate. They never again enjoyed the success they had early in the war.
