Windrixville
In the town of Windrixville (no state named, fictional place)
Jay mountain is in Windrixville. Dallas: hop the three-fifteen freight to Windrixville. There's an old abandoned church on top of Jay Mountain...
Johnny and Ponyboy went to Windrixville. I believe that it's in Oklahoma. I know their hometown was Tulsa and the book was based in 1965.

In "The Outsiders," Johnny gets beaten up by a group of Socs after they confront him and his friend Ponyboy while they are walking in a park. The Socs, who are from the wealthier side of town, attack Johnny and Ponyboy, leaving Johnny traumatized and feeling helpless. This incident significantly impacts Johnny's character and contributes to his fear of confrontation throughout the story.
Ponyboy and Johnny used a train to escape after the incident in which Johnny killed Bob in self-defense. They hopped on a freight train to reach the countryside, where they planned to hide out. This mode of transportation allowed them to leave town quickly and avoid being caught.
Johnny is an outsider because he lives on the east side of town and is poor. He has an alcoholic and abusive mother and father. His best friend is Ponyboy Curtis and got in a fight with one of the Socs.
Johnny and Ponyboy hid a gun and a copy of "Gone with the Wind" after they fled from town following the incident where Johnny killed Bob. They sought refuge in an abandoned church, where they also hid out to avoid being caught. The book became a symbol of their friendship and shared experiences during their time in hiding.
One reason is that Johnny is Ponyboy's best friend. Another reason is he needed his best friend at the moment and Johnny was not going any where as he was not wanted at home and he had been asleep in the lot. Johnny has been there for pony, so that is probably why.
