Plants and animals are classified according to an artificial classification system known as binomial nomenclature; the system is artificial insofar that it is man made, but is based on scientific/ botanical fact.

This is a "Latinised" description comprises of two "names", the first name is referred to as the Genus and can be compared to the family name (or surname of a person. The second part of the name is the Species and can be compared to a persons first (or Christian name).

This helps horticulturists and botanists to identify specific plants.

For example:

Quercus is the Genus name for all Oak Trees, specific species of Oak are the identified specifically using the Species name such as robur, suber, cerris.

Quercus robur - The English Oak

Quercus suber - The Spanish or Cork Oak

Quercus cerris - The Turkey Oak

Please note that this is a very simplistic definition of binomial nomenclature there are a lot more detailed answers on the Web if you are interested in exploring this further.
