Satellites used for Global positioning, send clock signals back to the earth, along with identity signals. The timing of the clock signals are very accurately controlled.

The receiver uses the clock signals and by applying mathematical processes and comparing with an on board almanac, calculates the receiver's position.

At least three signals from different satellites are required to fix a position. More signals then add to the accuracy.
