A ⅝" needle is sufficient in adults weighing <130 lbs (<60 kg); a 1" needle is sufficient in adults weighing 130-152 lbs (60-70 kg); a 1-1½" needle is recommended in women weighing 152-200 lbs (70-90 kg) and men weighing 152-260 lbs (70-118 kg); a 1½" needle is recommended in women weighing >200 lbs (>90 kg) or men weighing >260 lbs (>118 kg). A ⅝" (16mm) needle may be used only if the skin is stretched tight, the subcutaneous tissue is not bunched, and injection is made at a 90-degree angle.

However a 5/8" needle is not suitable for many intramuscular injection! Despite what your fancy web site says it is not long enough.

That depends on the amount of medication being administered. You want to use a syringe that accomodates the amount of medication being administered..obviously if you are giving your patient 1.2 mL, you can't use a 1 mL syringe. For amounts less than 1 mL, you would want to use a 1 mL syringe. For amounts greater than that, you can use a 2, 3, or 4 mL syringe -- the general rule is 1 mL if less than 1mL is being given, and a 3 mL for the others. Also, the max you want to administer via IM is 4 mL unless you are injecting in the deltoid...then the max is 1mL.

What is the minimum needle length is recommended for administering HepB vaccine to an adult patient weighing 130 lb?

Hepatitis B is an intramuscular injection, and needle length should be chosen based on the age and BMI of the patient.

What is the length of a subcutaneous injection?

Depends on how long the needle is and how big the syringe is. Or, if you're asking about the length of time a subQ injection takes, it only takes a few seconds, less if there's not much to inject.

What syringe and needle size is used for immunotherapy?

For the 2012-2013 flu season there are three formulations, the two prior types of nasal mist and intramuscular (IM) formulations, and now, new in the 2011-2012 flu season, there is an intradermal (ID) formulation.Intramuscular Injections:Any one cc syringe for IM (intramuscular) injections is good to use. For IM, you need a needle that is one to one and a half inches long and, typically, a 25 gauge needle is used.Intradermal Injections:Fluzone Intradermal vaccine comes in a new prefilled single dose syringe as part of the microinjection system designed to consistently deposit vaccine antigens into the dermal layer of the skin of adults for inoculation.Typically, in the past adult influenza parenteral vaccines were administered into the muscle utilizing a needle 1 inch to 1.5 inches (25 mm to 38 mm) in length as mentioned above. Fluzone Intradermal vaccine features an ultra-fine needle that is 0.06 inches (1.5 mm) in length. The needle is 90% shorter than a needle for IM injection and much more fine. See related questions for more information about intradermal flu vaccinations.

Is a five-eighth inch needle long enough for a swine flu vaccination?

Usually not, but each clinician who is licensed to give injections is trained to determine what equipment is needed for each patient, and how and where the injection will be given based upon the specific prescription orders. Each patient has a different amount and location of fatty tissue. The less fat, usually the shorter the needle needs to be to reach the muscle tissue beneath it. The clinician may slightly alter the angle of injection to adjust for individuals with very little fat, or determine that a shorter needle is required. Usually IM injections are given with a one inch or one and a half inch needle for average sized adults, but this may vary depending on the individual and the prescription. For the 2011-2012 flu season, there is a newly approved intradermal injection that uses a much shorter and ultra-fine needle. It is approved for use in patients age 18 - 64.For the average adult:Intramuscular Injections:Any one cc syringe for IM (intramuscular) injections is good to use. What gauge needle do you use to give a horse a shot?

For vaccines or to draw blood I would use a 20 gauge needle on adult sheep and a 22 gauge on a lamb. To administer medications such as penicillin, I would use a 16 or 18 gauge depending upon the drug and the volume needed.

What gauge and length needle is used in childs flu vaccines?

This is from the CDC's flu vaccine instructions to health care providers: "The intramuscular route is recommended for TIV. Adults and older children should be vaccinated in the deltoid muscle. A needle length of 1 inch or longer (>25 mm) should be considered for persons in these age groups because needles of <1 inch might be of insufficient length to penetrate muscle tissue in certain adults and older children. When injecting into the deltoid muscle among children with adequate deltoid muscle mass, a needle length of 7/8--1.25 inches is recommended. Infants and young children should be vaccinated in the anterolateral aspect of the thigh. A needle length of 7/8--1 inch should be used for children aged <12 months." http://www.cdc.gov/flu/professionals/acip/dosage.htm

What is the needle length for intradermal injections?

The needle length for intradermal injections is 3/8" to 3/4" for baby or an adult. Intradermal injections are placed in back of upper arm, upper chest and upper back.

What angle do you give flu shot?

This depends on the length of the needle you are using, the location chosen for the shot, and the size of the person being injected. Flu vaccine is given as an IM (intramuscular) injection. For most people, a regular 25 or 22 gauge needle that is one inch or one and one half inches long is the proper size.If you are giving the shot in the upper arm in the deltoid muscle or in the upper outer quadrant of the buttocks in the gluteus maximus muscle in adults (or the lateral thigh in children), who are normal sized with typical muscle mass, the angle of injection should usually be straight in (or 90 degree angle to the skin). However, if you are giving the injection to someone with very little muscle mass, such as a frail elderly person, a small child, or extremely thin person, you may need to choose a shorter needle, perhaps even one half inch long, and continue at a 90 degree angle. Experienced medical professionals may sometimes use the same (one inch or one and a half inch) size needle, and alter the angle of injection just slightly so that they do not inject too deeply. Usually, a 60 degree angle will compensate for the more shallow muscle tissue, but that is a judgment call that requires knowledge of anatomy and experience, so it is best left to a professional to give injections to the ultra thin and small.
