Best Answer

Peterburg, Leningrad, Petrograd.

St. Petersburg was founded with the name St. Petersburg. In 1914, when World War I broke out, it was renamed Petrograd, because the name sounded too Germanic and Russia was at war with Germany. In 1924, when Vladimir Lenin died, it was renamed Leningrad. In 1999, it was returned to its original name St. Petersburg.

When Peter I (the Great) built St.Petersburg, he named it for his patron saint.

Following the October Revolution of 1917 it was renamed to the less German sounding, Petrograd (Peter's City).

Following the death of Vladimir Lenin, it was renamed to Leningrad (Lenin's City).

When the USSR disintegrated, the name was returned to St.Petersburg, along with a lot of other cities and towns to their pre-soviet names.
