Everything, the biggest responsibilities have to do with the ADA the American Disabity Act. They have tons of rules when it comes to making sure everything is up to code and is Ergonomically and Anthropometrically correct. Mainly the rules are different in Residential design and Commercial design. With Residential design the Designer is given a shell of the home from the architect and then has to include everything from the walls, doors, windows, the electrical plans, Plumbing, where to place light switches as well as outlets then determine whether the outlet is GFI 110 or 220. If your in school for Interior design you'll know what I mean. Then the same applies to commercial design but you have to make everything handicap accessible otherwise they will sue you. Also make sure that in the state you want to go to school for has such a thing as a "Licensed Interior designers". The reason I say this is because I went to the Art Institute of Phoenix in Arizona and just before I graduated they informed me that there was no such thing as a licensed interior designer in the state of Arizona. That would have been real nice to know before I wasted my time. Plus then you have to pass the NCIDQ to get your license and that thing is almost impossible to pass. So there are a lot of responsibilities and requirements, do your homework first.
